Software Tools and Data Sources
PathPort
The Pathogen Portal (PathPort) Project at VBI has developed a software framework for the interoperation of analysis and visualization tools and data sources of relevance to biothreat agent research. PathPort provides access to data sources and server services such as GenBank, PubMed, SWISS-PROT, TIGR and domain literature, as well as tools to analyze data, such as similarity search engines. This data is available for analysis through PathPort's interactive viewer components.
MARCE Bioinformatics Online Tutorial
The MARCE Bioinformatics Online Tutorial is now available! The tutorial consists of an introduction to VBI, an introduction to multi-faceted bioinformatics analysis, and a review of key theory and tools for bioinformatics research, including Search, Alignment, Phylogeny, Hidden Markov Models, Orthologous Clusters and Genome Comparison. The course presents the available bioinformatics resources and tools, using Francisella tularensis as the example organism, and contains exercises to give the user some hands-on experience.
To access the course, please visit the following website (

The website contains a description of the course, as well as instructions for gaining access to the course.
PATRIC
As one of the eight Bioinfomatics Resource Centers funded by the National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, PATRIC's goal is to provide a comprehensive and accurate web-based resource for genomic and associated information on a number of important human pathogens.
Proteomics Data Center
Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) is working with Social and Scientific Systems, Inc (SSS), the administrative center of the NIAID-funded Proteomics Research Centers (PRCs), to help design, develop, and maintain a publicly accessible website containing data and technology protocols generated by each PRC, as well as a catalog that lists reagents and products developed by the sites and available for public distribution.
